About this work
A large-scale commercial mural created for Bumsted’s, transforming the exterior of the restaurant into a playful reinterpretation of Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks. The composition incorporates Bumsted’s signature heart-shaped mascot characters, reimagined as recognizable pop-culture figures including Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, and Elvis Presley, alongside human figures and architectural elements.
Drawing from Hopper’s iconic late-night diner scene, the mural creates its own contemporary narrative centered around the restaurant and its community. The artists also incorporated themselves into the scene, paying homage to Hopper while celebrating their own place within Tucson’s local arts community. The result is a playful fusion of pop culture, art history, local identity, and the restaurant’s visual language, transforming a familiar cultural reference into something distinctly connected to Bumsted’s and Tucson.
