In the artist's words
Melissa Ornelas is a multidisciplinary visual artist whose relationship with art began almost as early as she can remember. From early childhood, drawing and creating were her favorite things to do—and for much of her childhood, art was simply all she wanted to do. She began taking art classes at a young age, building an early foundation in artistic techniques while continuously experimenting and creating independently. Although she has received formal art instruction throughout her life, much of her artistic development has been self-taught, shaped by years of observation, experimentation, curiosity, and hands-on practice.
Rather than limiting herself to one medium or discipline, Ornelas has continued to expand her creative practice across drawing, painting, large-scale murals, mosaics, photography, and mixed media. This versatility allows her to approach each project differently, choosing materials and techniques according to the idea, environment, or feeling she wants to communicate.
Her visual language draws heavily from nature, desert landscapes, animals, symbolism, spirituality, identity, transformation, and surreal imagery. Growing up with Mexican and Southwestern influences has also contributed to her connection with vibrant color, organic forms, desert environments, and culturally rich visual traditions. Across different mediums, her work often moves between the tangible and the symbolic—combining recognizable elements of the natural world with imagery connected to imagination, intuition, and the mystical.
Her murals transform architectural spaces into immersive environments, while her mosaics use individual fragments of material to construct larger images and narratives. Drawing and painting allow for a more immediate and intuitive form of expression, while photography gives her another way to explore atmosphere, identity, perception, and visual experimentation. Despite the differences between these mediums, they are connected by the same curiosity that has driven her to create since childhood.
For Ornelas, being an artist is not defined by mastery of a single technique. Her practice is rooted in exploration and in the freedom to continually learn new ways of making. Her largely self-taught background has encouraged an experimental approach in which unfamiliar materials and techniques become opportunities for discovery rather than limitations.
What began as a childhood need to draw and create has developed into an evolving multidisciplinary practice. Through each new medium, Ornelas continues to build a visual world centered around nature, symbolism, transformation, imagination, and the surreal—while maintaining the same instinctive desire to create that has been present throughout her life.
